Crawford County Sheriff's Office
Sheriff Dan Peak is proud to announce that two deputies with the Crawford County Sheriff’s Office are co-recipients of the Kansas Sheriff’s Association “Deputy of the Year” award. Deputies A.J. Terry and Rusty Akins will be presented with their awards at the Kansas Sheriff’s Association conference in Dodge City, KS on November 17.
Terry and Akins were nominated for the award by Sheriff Peak for their lifesaving efforts in two separate incidents in 2016.
On April 28th in Pittsburg, KS. Deputy Terry responded to a house fire where he entered and carried a toddler, overcome by smoke, out of a second story window. While on the roof, Terry was able to revive the youngster then helped him, his father and brother down from the roof of the burning house.
On June 10, Deputy Akins, likewise provided life-saving skills on a toddler who had fallen into a neighbor's swimming pool. Akins was off duty at the time when the neighbors came to him for help. Akins found the toddler was not breathing and was able to revive her before EMS arrived.
Of note- two other deputies, Sergeant Jason VanBecelaere and Deputy Tim Milburn were nominated for the award by Cherokee County Sheriff David Groves for heroism displayed in an incident that originated in Columbus, Kansas and ended east of Girard, Kansas. Both officers engaged in a gunfight with a subject who fled from Cherokee County authorities after firing his weapon and threatening members of the public and city workers.
